Tony Glover has been in racing for over 35 years and has built the reputation as one of the top mechanical minds in motor sports. Glover, the 1991 AC Delco Crew Chief of the Year and 1992 Western Auto Mechanic of the Year, has a knack for developing drivers and winning big races. Drivers under his guidance have taken the checkered flag at the Daytona 500 three times, including back-to-back wins by Sterling Marlin in 1994 and 1995.
Glover was the team manager of Team SABCO when Chip Ganassi purchased majority ownership of the organization from Felix Sabates in 2000. After the purchase, Glover was partnered with Andy Graves, and together they served as team managers of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) for more than five years. They led the team to a third-place finish in the 2001 NASCAR Sprint Cup standings with Marlin and a Raybestos Rookie of the Year title with Jamie McMurray in 2003.
Changes were in store for the team Glover managed in both 2006 and 2007. Bringing in Juan Pablo Montoya from the Formula One circuit was cause for excitement in ’06, and the following year, the open-wheel invasion continued when it was announced that Montoya’s former CART competitor and ’07 IndyCar Champion Dario Franchitti would be joining CGRFS.
As Glover looks to his 36th year of racing, he expects even more change and even greater success to sweep over the organization. Montoya’s sophomore season in the Sprint Cup Series, teamed with rookie Franchitti and a steady 21-year-old Reed Sorenson, along with a strong group of Nationwide Series drivers, is bound to make 2008 a season to keep tabs on at CGRFS. |
