Rock and Roll 400 - Richmond International Raceway Advance
Texaco/Havoline Team Facts:
NEXTEL Cup Series
- Standings: Casey Mears and the Texaco/Havoline team moved back into the 15th position following their 14th-place finish at California Speedway on Sunday. Mears and crew chief Donnie Wingo topped off the fuel cell with just over 50 laps to go and was running 11th when Mears took the white flag. Unfortunately the car sputtered in Turn 2 and Mears lost three spots before taking the checkered flag in 14th. With 2,685 points, Mears sits 61 points out of 14th place in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup standings with 11 races remaining.
- Richmond: Mears will be making his eighth start at the .75-mile oval this weekend in the Rock & Roll 400 Saturday night. He earned his best finish of 17th in the Crown Royal 400 this past May after starting from the third position, also a career-best at Richmond. Mears and the Texaco/Havoline team battled back from the 38th position on lap 125 to finish 17th. It wasn’t an easy journey to 17th as Mears was blocked in his pits, spun in oil and missed earning the free pass back onto the lead lap by one lap when the caution waved with 10 laps to go. Mears will be looking to capture his first top-10 finish at the short track on Saturday night.
- Chassis: Crew chief Donnie Wingo and the Texaco/Havoline team are bringing chassis #616 for the Rock & Roll 400. This chassis was a new short track car developed at CGRFS and ran at Loudon in July. Mears finished 21st in New Hampshire after locking up the brakes to avoid an incident with two laps remaining in the race.
- Richmond Local: Texaco/Havoline crew member Ryan Quann, who works in the composite shop and serves as pit and driver support on race day, hails from Richmond, Va. He has been working for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (and SABCO) for the past six years.
Casey Mears Quotes:
“Obviously we are not where we wanted to be in points going into Richmond. But, I’m really looking forward to going back. We are taking the short track car the guys developed for the three Cup teams that we ran at Loudon. It was the best short track car I’ve ever had. Reed led laps and ran up front most of the day at Loudon. The guys worked hard on this car, so hopefully they will see the results of that work this weekend.
“Racing at night at Richmond is cool. I haven’t had much luck at the track, but it is a fun atmosphere. The fans are so enthusiastic about the racing, and with it being the last race before the Chase, there is that extra added excitement for them.”
