My View on the Glen

I suppose if you are reading this you know what went on at the race so I am not going to talk much about practice although I will say that qualifying got rained out, so we started by points.  I am going to let you know how I saw the events of the day being played out from my vantage point high atop the front straight grandstands.

Juan made up a lot of ground on the first couple of runs and made it into the top 10.  For some reason the first gear in our car was much taller than any other car, which means that at low speed (like during restarts) the car was very sluggish on the take off, but was very fast once it got going.  Once we got into a good position on the track inside the top 10, restarts were very critical and we simply lost spots on the initial take off.  Juan had caught Jimmie Johnson and had position on him two times and Johnson “chopped” him both times.  It caused us to lose a spot because of the momentum loss and Juan expressed his mind on what Johnson had done.  I made my way to Johnsons spotter just a few spots down from me and I told him “Just so you know….next time he comes down on us, he is going around!” He responded with “I told him both times that you were down there!” I started back down to my position and sure enough Juan had a run under him into the final turn and Johnson came down on him, contact was made and Johnson went around.  I hate that it happened but, the warning was given and that was that.

Knowing that we were a sitting duck with the first gear the way it was, Juan and I talked about different ways he could keep momentum, but Jeff Gordon brought the field down so slow it did no good.  With under 20 laps remaining, it was getting to be crunch time.  If we were going to be a contender, we could not lose any more positions on restarts.  When the green flag flew the #1 car of Martin Truex was behind Juan and had a bit of a run.  I told Juan that he had a run and to “defend the bottom.”  Juan went to the bottom and Truex blatantly hit him in the back.  He hit Juan so hard it knocked him directly into Kevin Harvick and there was a pretty big wreck.  After Juan and Harvick spun, we were hit very hard by the 31 car.  Juan and Harvick got out of their cars and had words with each other, I know Harvick was mad because he got involved but at the time he did not know that Juan had been wrecked. It was a spur of the moment, real time call.  I could have told him to just let him by and a couple of others would have followed, but I tell you what, I came to Watkins Glen to win the race.  I did not go to sit there and let people just drive by.  We had a very good race car, maybe a little more patience on my part was in order.  I know that everything that I say has an influence on the race, but as I said before we came to win and I felt it was time to GO! I knew that it would take some time to catch and pass others for higher positions.  But I will tell you this, I am proud to have a driver that will not take any crap from other drivers out there. Harvick thinks he can get out of his car a bully people around like he has done in the past, but I think today he met his match!

I have to say I'm frustrated how other driver particularly Harvick can say that JP is a wild out of control driver. Just because he is a rookie doesn’t mean he doesn't know how to drive, JP can drive Sonoma and Indy proved that. Yet had someone like Jeff Gordon ran into Harvick it would have just played off as an accident. JP & Tab you keep fighting hard your fans see the truth. Great job and keep it up.

Hey Tab! It was looking to be a pretty good finish for the 42 until "the" incident. Kudos to JPM for standing up to Harvick. Harvick is all bark and no bite and I think that he bit off more than he could chew with JPM! I am sorry that the finish sucked, but the run was awesome. You and the crew did a great job despite the finish. Good luck next week at Michigan ;)

Rock on Tab. Love your blogs, love the team. The fight with Harvick showed you guys have taken the team to the next level. Let's get a few wins to cap off the year.

We believe in you!

Good explanation Tab. From a fan's perspective, you guys did the right thing. It seems certain drivers feel that they are owed a level of respect that is irrational. They essentially don't want anyone to race them and conversely when they race you, they want you to just move over because of who they are. I think Harvick and Johnson both have some of this mentality. Harvick more than Johnson. I'm glad you guys stood up to him. We'll never get anywhere by just pulling over. People fault guys when they block, but everybody does. It's apart of racing. And I'm glad you mentioned Truex, because it was obvious to me that he was to blame in this whole incident. Coming down the hill entering turn 1 appears difficult enough in itself without having some moron slamming you in the back sending you fishtailing into the turn. It appeared that JPM did all he could to check up and avoid the wreck. I hate that we missed out on a soilid finish, but I like you guys being aggressive. We'll never fault you for that. Keep up the good work.

Tab
Great job! JPM was in contention all day because of good work by the both of you. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the updates. Looks like Nascar will allow other drivers to bump from behind intentionally and get away with it. That made 2 days in arow. We all know a good tap from behind in a road race will take a car out of the running. They also know JPM will go to the front towards the end and shell out a severe lesson in road racing. Despite the BS I have truely enjoyed this season with You and JPM. I know we have great things coming in the near future

There was nobody in that race that can compare to 7 victories in F1, a CART Championship, Indy 500, 24 Hours @Daytona, a win at Sonoma on your first try starting from the back, etc. I agree with you 100% TAB, the 42 did what it needed to do to block the 1, it looks like Truex got a little loose before he hit the 42. Harvick was an innocent bystander and took out his frustrations on Juan incorrectly. Props to Juan for standing up for himself, no offense to the 29 team, but they have no chance against the Big Red/Texaco Havoline Dodge on a road course.
