Mayhem at Martinsville!

The weekend of Martinsville started out really well.  Six other guys and I on the team took advantage of really good weather to ride our motorcycles to Virginia for the race.  It was only about a two hour trip and it was really nice to get out on the bike for an afternoon of good riding.  There are a few races throughout the year that we are able to ride to that are not too far away.  I should have considered the weather forecast for later in the week!  I will get to that later.

Practice went well and when qualifying came we knew the field would be close.  The speeds are really slow at Martinsville and it makes qualifying very difficult. Acceleration is very important and the tires have very little time to get any temperature in them to help grip.  The whole thing is over before the “get up to speed” laps at most track.   We qualified 29th but with the field so close only one tenth of a second would have put us in the top 15.  It is crazy that all of the cars are that close. Then you have to try to pass them in the race!

Sunday came and so did the cold weather!  I could not believe how cold it was!  I had on every single piece of warm clothing that I could find.  We were on top of the main grandstand totally exposed to all of the wind and misty rain that stayed with us all day long.  I had a thick face mask on and I did not want to sound muffled on the radio, if the microphone is not right up to your mouth it is very difficult to hear.  Before the race I cut a hole in it to put the microphone through, it worked excellent and I stayed pretty cozy considering the elements!  I could not wait for the race to get started.  Martinsville is very action packed and I knew Juan would be on a mission to get to the front.  He is always fun to watch at a place like this!

When the race started it was pure mayhem!  People were bumping and pushing each other all day and Juan was no exception!  He did a really good job of passing people as soon as he got to them.  Lots of people lose time waiting for the right moment but Juan attacked quickly.  It was a very physical race.  There were many different pit strategies being played out by many different teams.  We worked our way into the top five at one point.  Our car had an aggressive set-up that wore the tires a bit more than we wanted, but it had to be this way because of the starting position.  We had to be able to go through the field and not get a lap down.  It was a good strategy because we never came close to it!  At about 40 to 50 laps in a run our tires started to give up a bit. A caution came out about 35 laps into one run and we had to pit or we would have been toast if it was a long green period.  That is when we fell back to around 20th.  Juan did an excellent job for the rest of the afternoon slicing and dicing for position, having tremendous battles even with lapped cars.  Juan came over the radio and asked me “Why doesn’t the 84 car give me any room?!”  In the mean time Juan went three wide with him and another car!  I said to Juan “He can’t!  He has someone outside of him too!”  Juan’s response was “So what!!”  I just had to laugh, he was right, we had to get going.  Juan made many more really good three-wide passes with lots of precision.  He battled all the way to the line on the last lap and came away with a 13th-place finish.  I really wanted a top 10, but considering all of the potential for trouble we will take it.  Today when we got the car back to the shop we discovered the radiator had been leaking for about 160 laps resulting from one of the hard bumps in the race.  We got very lucky, that could have easily ended the day.

Now that the race was over I left on all of the warm clothes because it was now time to ride the motorcycles home!  It was 39 degrees Fahrenheit and raining when we left the track.  What were we thinking on Thursday?  That was an all new cold that I have never experienced before.  It actually was not too bad, my hands just got very cold.  We stopped once to warm up and rode the rest of the way home.  It was quite an experience.  We will talk about that one for a while.  That is why I did not have the blog for you yesterday!  I needed a day to thaw out!  Now it is off to Texas, one of my favorite tracks and states.  Tomorrow we will put the finishing touches on the cars and loading them onto the hauler for the trip to Texas.  I will talk to you after the race!  Have a good one!

Hey Tab;
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading your blog on a weekly basis. I love the fact that I can get the 'inside scoop' on everything that happens during the race. I'm one of the many fans that Juan brought along when he moved to NASCAR. Keep up the good job and thank you.

Hi Tabb
More power to you – I froze my backsides off Sunday, but wouldn’t leave until the checkers. If we (you would think I was part of 42 team) keeping gaining two positions each race, we will be sitting on top of the heap in no time. Juan is flying under the radar with the news media - from 32 to 17 in six races – excellent. He will be banging on the Chase door with an oval win and the press will ask – were did he come from. Keep digging, a top 5 would be sweet in Texas – hope it is a win!

Tab, it's really exciting reading your description of the race. All this action we TV viewers miss, since cameras show the leaders most of the time. These middle-of-the-pack battles are indeed most interesting. I hope the team will continue to improve in Texas. Closing the gap to the leaders is a must. Look forward to it.

Nice one! For my oppinion this was his best race in this young season. There was so much action on the racetrack that i needed one hour to calm down after looking the race on TV. It´s nice to see that Montoya is in the near for the chase and that the hole team has improved its strength. One question i have: Why has he pitted late in the race with Tony Steward? I saw no advantage because he lost track position.
I am a big Montoya Fan since his first F1 race and i love looking Nascar because i love the action on the racetrack. Thanks for your good work as spotter and for the blog after every race.

Everybody on the 42 team did a great job on Sunday! It was awesome to see JPM mixing it up. I was listening to the radio and thought what Juan said about the 84 was awesome. You guys keep it up and don't back down!

Hey Tab, I heard a few other things about that 84 car on Sunday, too! Not the kind of thing that can be brought up in "mixed company" as my parents say. Let's just say that wasn't the most popular car on the track that day. :)
Either way, that was one heck of a race. I couldn't believe how Juan was just driving by some of those cars. And that battle for 13th at the end was about as nail-biting as it gets. I still don't know how he kept the 01 car behind him for those last laps.

Go 42 team!

Thanks, Tab. I figured you were freezing your rear end off up on top, Sunday. Good finish for Juan in that grueling 500 lapper. Tell him to keep diggin. Texas might be the charm. I like Big Red, but it sure is alot easier to spot Juan with that big Texaco Star on his hood. LOL!

Hey Tab,
We just started listenting to you on track scan, we are newbies to NASCAR. What are the numbers you are yelling out every lap?
Thanks and keep up the positive talk. Juan needs that we hear. You and Donnie are great to listen too, we love it.

Spotting for Juan must be the best job in the world... enjoy! At least a top 10 in Texas!

For Karen Aytes,

That is not actually Tab who calls out the numbers. That is Donnie Wingo, Juan's crew chief. The numbers he calls out are lap times. If you listened to Texas, you would have heard a lot of "260 280 out back" which Juan would understand to mean he ran a 32.60 second lap and the guy behind him on the track ran a 32.80 second lap.The idea is for Juan to understand how changes in line or traffic are affecting his times. Tab throws out the "Really good corner there" and Donnie gives the empirical evidence of whether it really was good.

Hope that helped.

Mike,
Yes that helped - thanks for you answer! I figured out the difference in their voices now. But they say we will have someone else in Talladega? I just got this down. I am sure I will have more questions in the future. LOL
Take care!
