P2 at Talladega

Once again it was a very exciting week in Talladega.  The Superspeedway races are so different than any of the other tracks, you almost need to be in a different “mode” than normal.  The crew chief swap this week took everyone by surprise and everything went really smooth this weekend in regards to all of that.

The track is so big at Talladega handling is almost not an issue.  You can usually go anywhere and it is all about horsepower and aerodynamics.  When practice started we immediately got into the pack and did some drafting practice.  After a few runs totaling about 25 laps we felt the car was driving pretty good and did not want to take a chance of getting into an accident so we parked it and started preparing for the race.  This was an “impound” race which means that after qualifying, we are not allowed to touch the car except for a few minor things on race morning.  After qualifying we were to start in the 26th position, which I thought was rather well considering we concentrated on race pace instead of starting position.

I was really looking forward to this race, even though it is definitely the most difficult track on the circuit for me.  The last few Superspeedway races have been pretty fun, even though it is pretty much chaos!

As the race started Juan moved nicely through the field.  There are so many times when you are up front and then you get shuffled to the back of the pack.  It is very difficult to choose the correct lane to do your passing.  Most of the time the cars are three-wide on the track and if one person switches lanes it causes others behind to slow momentarily and lose momentum.  Juan did a superb job being very patient all day even under extreme pressure being four-wide at times!  The car ran really well all day and I never felt we were stuck in the back of the pack.  Juan would sometimes take it easy to cool off the engine and then would make his way back into the top 10.

One time at the exit of turn two a few cars in front of Juan “stacked up”, it happened so quickly I could not get the words out of my mouth!  Juan hit the guy in front of him and it put quite a dent in the front of the car.  Even though it was not optimal the car still ran rather well, even going to the front and leading a few laps with the help of Denny Hamlin pushing him.  I don’t mean a cushion of air, he was literally pushing Juan to the front!  Quite a few people started doing this to get to the front of the pack.  That was something that had not been done in the past.  Two of these cars could join together bumper to bumper and were unbelievably fast.

After a lot of good racing we were into the final laps.  Dario Franchitti was injured in the race the day before so David Stemme was back in the 40 car filling in for this race.  On a restart, Juan was fourth with Stremme behind him.  They were able to get an excellent run and Stremme pushed Juan all the way to second and Juan slowly blended in the bottom lane.  It was only a matter of inches for Stremme to be clear to fall in line with us but he didn’t quite make it and fell back quite a bit.  I really wished he could have made it in the hole that was there but the 12 car closed it up when he was bump drafted from behind.

We were down to the final two laps.  All that I was thinking and I told Juan was “Don’t make your move too soon!”  In the past I have seen it so many times where you get shuffled to the back in the final lap.  As they took the white flag and entered the back straight, Juan had a plan and was waiting for turn four with the checkers in site to execute it and then…a caution!  “Oh no” I thought to myself!  The field is frozen and we were to finish second with no chance to make the move at the end.

It was a hard fought day and an excellent points day for us.  I had a really good time with the race and everyone on the team did an excellent job.  It felt good run up front most of the day.  Now it is off to Richmond for some Saturday night short track action.  We will be back in the Texaco/Havoline car this weekend and it will be a Big Red car at Darlington the following week.  I hope everyone has an excellent week and I will talk to you after Richmond!

Hey Tab,

It was very fun race to watch and even more to see Juan at the front. Thanks for the Blog, I was wondering why he did not make it into the final practice on Friday, I thought something was wrong. I was really waiting for that last corner move when the flag came out, I really thought he had the win on his hands! Getting closer, but it is definitely very nice to see him finish like this.

How is the chemistry of the team with Jimmy?

Way to go!!!! Great race – one of best this year and I enjoyed every minute of it. I was on the sofa yelling at the TV – “Heck Yes! You have a win in sight” and than the big one happened. Still second place is something to cheer about, now the 42 team needs more good finishes to get well entrench in the top 12.
Being a Virginian and RIR is my hometown track, I’ll be there cheering every lap. I love short track action and looking forward to Saturday Night under the Lights…..

Well done guys. I had not enjoyed myself watching a Nascar race as I did for Dega. It was awesome to see Juan making moves and stuck to Kyle's bumper. He looked like the boys that have been racing Nascar for a while. Just one question for Tab. Do you think the showing at Talladega is an indicator that Juan and the team are coming to grips, or was it just a one-off kind of thing? What should we fans expect for coming races? Do you think Juan will be able to keep himself in the first twelve?
Good day for everyone.

WELL DONE TEAM! Must have been a tense race Tab! I'm pretty sure we were all on the edge of the seat (or jumping around the room shouting at the TV!) at the end there.

A great race, and I'm sure a good boost for the team.

Keep it going, and good luck at Richmond!

Man! I thought we had us one. What a race, Juan's figured the drafting bit out. He did great. I wish David hadn't got shuffled back and caught up in the "big one". He had a great run, too. Dario's wreck, Saturday, scared me too death. I thought he was "really" going to be hurt bad. Is Schrader, or, maybe Sterlin Marlin going fill in this week. I know Penski's got David signed, now.
Thanks for the blog, y'all keep it up.

Thanks Tab,
Great race. Thanks to Denny Juan got to lead some laps and pick up 5 points. Whoda thunk Denny would be the man? (I take back half the times I called him a punk)

The finish was a little disappointing with the yellow. After hearing the press conference with Juan’s and Denny’s strategy, coupled with how well Juan seemed to be getting off 4 all day, I thought Juan was in the best position to win this. But unlike F1 where if you in a position to win you will 90% of the time. In NASCAR that is less than 50/50 it seems. All a team can do is put itself in position. Do that a few times and the wins will come.

Great job, Lets carry that momentum into some short track action.

Tab,

With the Driver being a big part of the Race (and not so much car setup), do you think that the COT lends itself better (and offers better racing for the fans) to the 'Super Speedways' than places like Atlanta and Phoenix? It just seems to me that Drivers fight their cars around 'flat tracks' versus actually being able to race the COT at the Super Speedways.

Loved the Race, well done on the 2nd place finish... now to climb up to the top 10 in the Chase!

That was a great race to watch. All the early positioning seemed pretty normal, except when Hamlin or whoever decided to try pushing someone up front. Nice to see that Juan could stay up front and out of trouble (more cars behind = less chance of getting caught in the big one or two). New cars looked great with the matching bumpers allowing push-drafting (bump-drafting doesn't really describe it any more) without lifting the rear wheels, and the wing keeping Kyle Busch from wrecking when he got turned sideways.

Every car seemed to have crushed and scraped front and rear bumpers by the end. Juan's obviously more so because of the one big hit, but is that something you are allowed to correct? Seems like you were pretty worried about the radiator on the scanner. Do the rules allow you to internally reinforce the tip of the nose for the next Talladega or Daytona race for smaller hits like that, or do safety and other regulations totally eliminate that option?

Great run by the 42 team !!

It was nice to see the Juicy Fruit Dodge up front for most of the day. Those final 2 laps were very exciting. Too bad the 40 couldn't have stayed up front to help push Juan passed the 18 car. So close to a win but Second is a great showing. Gained 5 spots to get into the top 12 thats an outstanding weekend for you guys.

Now that the team is in the chase lets keep it there !!

Great race, you guys rocked! Tell Juan we are pulling for him to get a win on the short track at Richmond. We know Juan is not satisfied with 2nd, and we can't wait to see the win.

From the infamous Days of Thunder, Tom Cruise says it best... "When I'm in my racecar, there's a voice,he talks to me and I stay calm."

Superior spotting @ Dega Tab! Job well done. Great to see the 42 @ the top again. We were hoping to see you in VICTORY LANE though! Keep up the good work and we will keep on listening! "It's All Good!" "Come On" "YEAH"

I know I speak for legions of fans that want to thank Donnie for all he did for Juan, the team and all of the newbies that followed Juan to NASCAR. Please, let Donnie know that we will miss him.

As for Dega////////Yeah, woop and yowza!

How awesome is it that Juan, Denny and Kyle (and a few others) figured out how to push/pull on this track with the new cars? What did you think about that Tab?

And just in case it was not clear in my first paragraph…..

Thanks Donnie for all you did for Juan, we will miss you.

If you can pass it along Tab, that would be awesome.

Cheers,
Sail

P.S. Welcome to the team Jimmy.

Hey Tab, GREAT JOB to the whole team for Sunday's finish.
I was a fan in the stands (actually the Turn 9 terrace) at Infineon last season when Juan earned his first win and I was at 'Dega on Sunday. With two laps to go, I'm standing there with my binoculars up to my eyes and I realize my hands are shaking and I'm thinking, "I might just see his first oval win...at Talladega of all places." Very cool. It would have been worth the price of admission just to see the looks on those rednecks' faces when they realized the guy they booed during intros had beat all their favorites. HA!
I listened to y'all for the majority of the race and Juan seems to really enjoy plate racing. Jimmy and the crew had some great stops, especially the last one, if I remember right. Our seats, in the Tri-Oval Tower, Section C, row 60 (almost as high as all you spotters) were straight across the track from the 42 pit so we got to watch the crew and all their hard work.
Onward and upward. I'll be listening again next week on Track Pass.

Second place is and incredible team work. well done, congrats Tab.
nice to see Stremme pushing Montoya I thought "at least a little team work on the track" I'm not so sure Sorenson would do the same.

Awsome job guys, Juan and the team did a stella job.

Juans really getting the hang of this stock car racing isnt he, he looked like a veteran and was driver of the day on the English TV coverage.

Also have to backup what sail said a few comments back, thanks Donnie and Welcome Jimmy

Simply stunning to watch and keep it up, all the best for Richmond too guys.

YES!!! Now that's what I'm talking about! I'm as excited about how Juan drove that race as I am about where he finished. He seems so much more patient, picking his battles, and making the right moves. No doubt that has a lot to do with you Tab. He really seems to be understanding the draft more and more. Great to see the horsepower was there too. It usually is with you guys though. Awesome work. Keep it up. We knew you all had it in you! Bet you made Chip and Felix happy!!!!
