Rough Night in Richmond

The week of Richmond was very busy in the shop.  Along with the Richmond cars, we had to prepare two cars for a test at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte.  I am actually sitting in the tower high above the front straight here in Charlotte peaking over my computer screen to see when Juan will be coming out for the next run. Richmond was a bit of disappointment, but you have to keep an open mind when you are short track racing.  Anything can happen!  After a very strong qualifying effort it was looking like it was going to be a good night.

We fell back a little bit during the first stages of the race but we were still in pretty good shape. After one of the stops we seemed to have one of the stronger cars in traffic.  Juan was one of the few guys that could do some passing and I was quite impressed with that particular run.  After another caution, we pitted with a couple of minor changes and I mentioned to Juan that the last run was really good, but there was still a long way to go.  A couple of laps after the restart while coming out of turn two, the car got a little loose and Juan spun with slight contact to the outside wall.  The car was not severely damaged at all, but we were now stuck in the back of terrible traffic where it is so difficult to pass.

After running there a while and making up a bit of ground, the 10 car had some trouble and spun in front of the field.  The only words that I could get out of my mouth were “Check up!”  It was a huge pile-up and we were right in the middle of it.  Juan did some very quick thinking. When he realized that we were going to wreck, he spun the car backwards and hit them with the back of the car, which is way easier to fix than the front! Even though we wrecked and had a lot of damage, there was no suspension damage.  The guys replaced the deck-lid, wing and other minor repairs and only lost around 20 laps!  I think that is amazing!  By going back out on the track and running the rest of the race we made up around seven positions.  It was truly an eventful night with a lot of action.  Even though we fell out of the top 12 in points, everyone showed that they would not give up and fought to the end.

Night is beginning to fall on the test session here in Charlotte and the lights are coming on.  We are here testing for the All-Star race as well as the 600.  This track is so sensitive to temperature, as the sun goes down and the track cools off you can actually see the cars going faster!  It is off to Darlington this weekend for another Saturday night race with a newly paved track surface.  It should be a good one to watch.  This is the track that the groove is right next to the wall all the way around, it is awesome!  Have a good week and I will talk to you after Darlington!

Hey Tab,

I was impressed with how calm you guys were after everything that happened and even how you were making jokes being 20 laps down! Jokes aside, it showed how everybody in the team was looking to get as much points on the night given the circumstances and 7 positions can make the difference in the world later on.

Question, What's wrong with the 07? What is it with him? I heard you guys angry and I was even more angry to see him win!

Keep it up, next race will be a lot better.

Hi Tab,
Just bad luck at Richmond. Yahoo power ratings have Juan in 12 with the following:
“We're sticking with you, Juan, because if you hadn't gotten caught in the Richmond 'Big One,' you would have been right there.” I couldn’t have said it better – keep digging.
Question, will you be at the shop on May 23rd for fan day? I may drive down for the day and hope to meet you.

Well, actually this was the first race I have seen Juan make a fatal mistake. I think when he came out of the pits his car was running really fast and he decided to take it to another level and a slight mistake cost him not only at least a top 10 finish but a top five. His car was faster than Reed all night and look where he finished. On those short tracks you have to stay out of the back of the field, wrecks constantly happen. There was some funny stuff though and one of them was Waltrip, what a clown show. He is truly Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies, face actions, talk and sense. Casey Mears I'm sure enjoyed the ride, and he's one of Hendricks best. (Not) Well, good spotter job again and when your team ever changes to Toyota you could be living in Beverly Hills with Waltrip!!!
GOOOOOOOOOO 42...see ya

Gosh dang it, I missed the race! I was at a quinceaneras (Juan will know what that is) and I managed to sneak one peek as the national anthem was being played, and the next action I was able to see was Kyle Busch wrecking Junior. Later that night I feverishly checked the vids only to see Juan spin with no contact! At least the second time was on purpose, maybe the experience from first one came in handy, heh.

In closing, I think Juan had the biggest flames coming out of his exhaust during the Little Big One.

Yeah, when I saw #42 spin out about mid-race, and saw the nice custom rear fender, I said "awwww dang" because Juan looked like he was starting to move back up. On the upside, #18 is in the hot seat for spinning out NASCARs favorite son, so that means #42 is out of the "aggressive driver hot seat" for this week at least. Funny that when #20 and #88 cause the big wreck at 'Dega, and spoils #42s chance at his first oval win, nobody says Jack, but when #18 spins Jr, or #42 spins anybody, it's rants and raves all season. Just an observation from a Nascar Noob. Jr can do no wrong, #18 and #42 can do no right. Okay, Rant mode off. My son and I look forward to watching the #42 race every week. I wished I had the chance to see Juan in his open-wheel days, but wasn't watching much racing back then. My son has all the little cars and races them every day. If Juan doesn't win, then Pruett does. I've raised a Ganassi fan.
