Frustrating Day in Pocono

The one thing about racing that stresses me out the most is getting into accidents.  I know crashing is part of it, but I work really hard to keep Juan and our car out of trouble.  As many of you know we did have a crash today and it made me really angry.  I don’t know what I or Juan could have done differently.   It is all spur of the moment decisions.  Last week in Dover we were heros for avoiding a huge crash and this week we get into one.  The 07 car spun directly in front of us directly in the middle of the track and there was little time to judge where he was going and we hit him resulting in a huge fire.

The last couple of weeks have been stressful like I have never seen in my life before at the shop and around the track.  It is not always pretty in this sport and everyone is feeling it right now.  It is very tense and the mood is not very good like it was at the beginning of the year.  I am not being negative!  I am usually the positive one but you guys want to know what is happening so there it is.  I don’t know how we can work any harder to get prepared.  Everyone at the shop and the track has been working crazy hours with little time off.  Sometimes it is hard to remember what day it is.  Hopefully it will get better soon.

Enough of that, I will let you know more about what happened at Pocono.  Practice started off terrible.  Juan kept saying that something was wrong with the car and after the final practice before qualifying we did find something wrong.  As we went through NASCAR’s height requirement gauges they made us adjust something that threw some of our measurements off.  Even though it took some time to find this, when it was corrected, Juan qualified 21st, the best in quite a few weeks.  Happy with the qualifying, we prepared for final practice.  The practices went OK, but Juan did manage to brush the wall in final practice.  I did not think it was too bad, but when I made it to the garage area afterwards I could not believe the body damage that it had done.  We had to take all of the decals off of the right side of the car, remove and straighten all of the crush panels, seal up all of the replaced panels, and re-decal the car.  It was a huge ordeal!  We got the car back in good condition, finished the pre-race checklists and were ready to race.

When the race started I was happy with the progress.  Juan passed some cars and was doing really well.  Many people got on different pit strategies, and even though we did not have great track position at all times, we were still running pretty good.  Juan got really hot in the car.  We are going to look into more cooling and putting more heat shields on the oil lines and things around the diver compartment.  I think the style of cars we are racing today are generally very hot inside.  The summer races will be tough on the drivers.

Once the wreck happened, I thought we were done, but the guys did a tremendous job getting a new front end, radiator, oil cooler, numerous burnt up oil lines and brakes lines replaced and got the car back on the track!  The goal was to finish the race and gain as many positions as we could though attrition.  The car ran rather well considering the impact and repair that was done.  I have no idea where we finished; I was frustrated with the day but also satisfied that once again we never gave up.

Now it is off to Michigan, kind of a boring two-mile track with not much action.  We will make the best of it.  Have a good week and talk to you after the race.

That race was bad, Tab, you and Juan don't worry about it. I think y'all had a top 15 car, at least, if Juan's rearend didn't get too hot. LOL!!! I LMAO listening to Juan complaining about his hindend burning. I can imagine what he was going through. Keep diggin' and tell Juan to stay out of that friggin' wall at Michigan. We'll survive, and I'll be listening and pullin' for y'all at this weekend. And, by the way, I don't mind a dirty joke, or two over the scanner. LOL!

The guys in the garage did a splendid job of getting the 42 car back on the track. I must say a better job then the other two teams that were repairing wrecked cars in the garage.
I can understand the frustration and mood at the shop with the crew chief musical chairs and just pure bad luck with the wrecks – not of Juan making. I’m sure with the rumor mill running wild in the press is not helping much either. A word of encouragement, with all the hard work and commitment to the 42 team effort, things will turn around for you guys. Keep the faith, Juan is a winning driver, the spark will light with the 42 team and ya’ll will be on top of the heap.
An old school tip for keeping cool during races, place a frozen ice pack that has been put in a terry cloth pouch inside the fire suit on the stomach just below the breast plate – it works. Keep cool and keeping digging – you and Juan have very loyal fans out here.

Hello fellows:

How the R&D department is going? Seems to be backwards. How many tens are you slower? What about areo? What about a computer program simulation in practice and video camaras in each wheel to analyze their behavior and other details? I know that JPM is a great driver. It is very frustrating to me to see Juan week after week running just to survive...! Guys you need to find some ingenuity.

As I said in the thread last week, Juan had a top 10 or 15 car, but luck is something beyond anyone's control. I think neither Tab nor Juan had a chance to escape the wreck. Everything happened extremely fast and there was no room to maneuver. Keep it up; all of this is nothing but a learning process. Hope to see the team in better shape for Michigan and, obviously, for Sonoma, where I think Juan and team will excel, if we take a look at the test times.

It was bad seeing your driver not able to escape the crash, even though it wasn't his fault. Last week in dover I was jumping when he didn't crash and this weekend I was mad about it just because luck .
Is pure bad luck I was hoping for a turn around, but if nothing happens from here on I don't want to be negative but I think we won't make the chase for the simple fact that everybody around our point status is finding a sweet spot we haven't hit yet...

Thanks Tab for your reports they really help keep me updated on Juan and the team. I know the team is trying really hard and things will work out. Thanks for taking care of our driver.

as commented by the fan j devia above this post , it is verry frustrating to see juan strugle week in and week out specially if you been a fan for a long time like i have, couse we all know there is no body in nascar with the kind of resume in racing that juan has, none, i dont blame any crews or set-up etc. sorry, but chips equipment in nascar is not to the same level as the mid teams in nascar, #42 is in the 20 standings becouse juan is driving on pure will, as much yelling that he does i bet you he cares very much about his crews and wants to win for them, that is just how a great race car driver are...good luck keep on digging......

Tab,
Keep up the positive attitude, I know it can be hard but you have to for the rest of the team. Yes, Sunday must of been frustrating for you all. We could hear it in your voices. You are the reason we are enjoying NASCAR so much. You and Juan seem to have a good relationship. I think he trusts you more then anyone. You make a great team. We really like it when you guys laugh don't hear the other teams doing that. Best of luck next week, and we will see you in Sonoma!

I appreciate the honesty Tab. It is hard to keep positive when things are tough and not going the way you want it. Negativity will spread like a virus and affect yall's performance so try not to let last week's luck bring you down too much. The effort everyone is making at the shop will pay off soon. I think Kahne's recent success is a good example of that. They mentioned during the broadcast that he wrecked a while back and the 9 team used the rest of the race as a test session. That experimentation helped them key on a few things that made them better. The COT is a tough cookie. Some have it figured out better than others right now, but pretty soon you all will hit on it and things will get better from there. Don't sweat that wreck, it's over, so forget it and we'll get back on track at Michigan. DON'T LET ANYBODY IN THE SHOP GIVE UP! EVERYONE IS IMPORTANT TO THE TEAM HAVING SUCCESS! If Ganassi Racing can dominate IRL, there is no reason why you all can't dominate in Cup. Simple as that. It'll come, just keep plugging away. You're the man.

Tough luck again Tab but bad luck always happens in bad situations. You can't run continuously between P18 through P30. That is the wreck zone on a speedway and garbage happens all race long. I see no progress made on the COT for all three teams. 1 to 2 seconds slower per lap is a disaster. Hope Juan has the right turns dialed in because that is his only savior. For Dario and Reed, what a mess. Reed is working on dropping out of the top 35 and Dario has made a big mistake. It's the car, not the drivers. Casey Kahne not a super star driver, the crew had him dialed in up front. Your a great spotter and Juan is a great driver and I'll leave it at that.

I've been watching Juan since his Williams days in F1. He's been my favorite driver since then. No question in my mind he was the best of the bunch there. His speed and pure guts were incredible. Just fierce driving! He always made it fun to watch, just like in NASCAR.

It seems like the team is getting close. Just that one more inch! No doubt in my mind he will be winning championships soon! As far as the last race, it happens to everyone. Keep pushing!

Tab,

Really frustrating last few weeks for you guys. However, it seems the team is getting closer and closer to running up front. It will happen soon, I am positive. Can't wait to see you guys cross the checkers first this season. Good luck in Michigan and then onto my home track (Sonoma). Keep digging!

Het Tab! What a frustrating race! It was a shame that once again the 42 got involved in someone else's mess! The crew did a great job of getting the car back out on the track to get more of those valuable points. I must say though...you & JPM had me laughing hysterically with the in-car audio!!! The a$$ comment was a riot, but JPM saying that you should talk about it later was even funnier!!

Keeping the faith for a better finish!!

hey guys it was frustating seen JPM accident in that day, I think you guys are a better team everyday. I remenber last season the car wasn't fast on reestarts but looking into this season I think we are a lot faster on that deparment, now I will like to see better qualifying strategy, because all others teams around our point standings look like they going forward and we have to turn this thing around now if we want to make the chase.

Hello everybody I was wondering if anyone of you guys is been to Daytona and can get me a tip on which would be the best spot...
I have to choose between :
1. Tower 2, Lund or Allison.
2. Terrace, Tower or Box.
3. Mother in law recommends to buy tickets the day of race unstead of now.
Thanks and every comment will be appreciate.

Tab,

I've followed Juan since he tore up CART back in 1999; my goodness, has it been THAT long?! Anyway, he was always fun to watch, especially when contending for a win. I know you all are working hard to get better, and I hope that you all do so soon.

Unfortunately, NASCAR is so COMPETITIVE! While you're getting better, so are your competitors; they aren't resting on their laurels. Look at Roush-Fenway Racing. Last year, they didn't do so well; this year, they're giving Gibbs & HMS fits, and they appear to be getting stronger still-ouch!

Even the good teams can stumble, and they do. Look at Hendrick Motor Sports this year. Although many teams would like to have the year that HMS is having, they are NOT stomping everyone like they were last year; they are not invincible, as Gibbs has shown. Richard Childress Racing had fallen from glory for a few years until its revival last year. What about Robert Yates Racing? This once proud, championship winning organization hasn't run well, either; they too have won championships in the recent past. Just goes to show you that all teams have their ups and downs.

You're up against a LOT of good teams in NASCAR. Unlike IndyCar or F1, where two or three teams have a realistic chance of winning, you have many teams capable of winning in NASCAR. While you have three solid teams in NASCAR that are a threat to win every week (HMS, Gibbs, and Roush), there are other teams who can spoil the party, such as GEM. This is especially true as of late, given the great finishes the #9 has had this year. GEM is coming on strong, and if they keep it up, could end up dethroning one of the big three teams if they don't watch out.

Penske is capable of winning, though not consistently; they won @ Daytona, but haven't won since. However, former Indy 500 winner and indyCar champ, Sam Hornish, is showing us that he has the goods; he mixed it up with the #48 yesterday, and was competing for a win until having to make a pit stop for gas @ the end.

Though unsponsored, Robert Yates Racing has had some good runs lately; if they ever get funding again, they'll be in the mix once again. Once their cars are sponsored, they could definitely be a threat to win if the stars all come together on a given day.

And what about Red Bull Racing? They were joke last year, but no one's laughing at them now. Brian Vickers in the #83 car is consistently fighting for wins now; A.J. Allmendinger is bringing the #84 car closer to the front. RBR, though not in the same league as Gibbs, HMS, or RFR, is in GEM's league; though not a threat to win consistenly yet, they will be before long. Once they hit their stride, the big boys better be watchin' their mirrors, lest they get passed by.

You have the big three of HMS, Gibbs, and RFR who are always a threat to win; they are the big three in NASCAR at the moment. However, GEM & RBR have shown flashes of brilliance. They are regularly running in the Top 5; before long, they'll both be competing for wins. Both teams have the potential to dethrone one of the big three teams soon-a far cry from how either did last year. CGRFS is up against it; NASCAR is just so competitive, that it's hard to make progress. However, Chip Ganassi has ALWAYS had success in racing; he'll find a way to get you guys up to the top. Hhe's not used to being in 20th, and he won't rest until CGRFS is at the top-where he's ACCUSTOMED to being. Thanks, and good luck, Tab!
