After a rough couple of weeks we were looking forward to getting out to Sonoma for a road race.  We were looking for a solid top-10 run to get some momentum back for our team after some terrible finishes of late.  Michigan was so bad, when I left the track I also left the race there with it.  I apologize to those of you who were looking for a blog all week…I simply did not know what to say.  But this week we were in sunny California and had a more competitive run.

First practice went remarkably well.  The guys made many changes to the car to try different things and although the car would not run a super fast time, it was very consistent having a good pace throughout a long run.  The car was much better during qualifying this year and Juan secured the 21st-starting position.  Final practice was spent trying a few pre-determined set-ups during long runs and trying to determine correct gear ratios as the pace slowed down because of old tires.  We do lots of things at a road course preparing for the race that we usually do not do at a normal track for us.  Some of the things are replacing the entire clutch package, installing a new gearbox, installing a new gear and driveshaft, brand new rotors and brake calipers and really put an emphasis on brake cooling.  Road course racing is very hard on equipment and we try to prevent any kind of failure.

When the race started Juan was on a mission.  I am not sure how many cars he passed but it was quite a few and it put us in a very good position.  The first stint was very long and included a green-flag pit stop.  Crew Chief Brian Pattie brought Juan down pit road for tires, fuel and some minor adjustments.  It was perfect timing, because on the way out of the pits there was a caution on the track.  On this track it was OK because the leader had not yet completed the laps because it takes so long to make a circuit. We were still on the lead lap and when everyone else pitted it put us in second place!  Only a few cars were on the same strategy as us.  When we went back to green the leader drove off course and created a huge dust cloud.  Juan had to lift momentarily to avoid the spinning car and the 18 car barely squeezed by to take the lead.  Although we wanted to lead the race, it was still very early in the running.  After another green flag stop and another perfectly timed caution we maintained the second position going into the final third of the race.  We were very lucky with the way the cautions fell, it is about time something went our way.  The competition was getting a bit stronger and we were getting a little bit of pressure for second place.  The 26 car was getting closer and he had the 21 car getting closer to him.  Going into the most critical turn on the track, turn 11 the 26 car had a bit of a run on Juan, which was no big deal, but at the same time the 21 car was trying to pass the 26! They went into turn 11 three wide.  I told Juan to leave a lane on the bottom and he did, but the 21 car of Marcos Ambrose ”dive-bombed”  the both of them,  hit  Juan in the rear,  spun us out, and ruined any chance of battling for the win. I was really angry because I knew the chance of a win was over, but the race was not.  Juan did a great job recovering and avoiding another huge accident.  We came home with a great sixth-place finish!  We really needed that run to get us going again.

Now it is off to Loudon, New Hampshire for a flat one-mile oval.  I am looking forward to this one also.  Juan runs good at Martinsville and this is just double the size…twice as fast right?  Have a great week and I will talk to you after Loudon!

Great race, it was disappointing to see Ambrose barrel in like that (you could see it coming on TV as soon as everyone started braking for the turn). I was really looking forward to the latter part of the run - I had both the 18 and the 42 on the scanner, and Kurt was asking before the last pit stop that the 42 was set up better for the latter part of the run. If Juan could have stayed in second, closed the gap he left with the inevitable late cautions, then had more brakes and tires left over the last few laps, it definitely could have worked out.

Did the 26 try to pass Juan at the same point (uphill in the first turns, not a typical spot) that Juan passed him last year for the eventual win? Seemed the Crown Royal car was really pushing hard in those turns...

But still a great finish, the 88 car was pushing you guys further down, but nice to see cars push too hard and wreck out further up to end up in P6.

Fun race to watch, keep it up.

I listened to the interviews with Juan over the week-end and the one that impressed me the most was the one on Speed TV when Wendy Venturini ask Juan what was the most important to him and his answer was loyalty. Loyalty to Chip and to the 42 team means he believes in the future of the team. Yes I know he has a contract with Ganassi, however, he has demonstrated commitment to making the 42 team a winning team, unlike another driver for Penske that is looking to leave because of average performance.
I never knew who Juan Pablo Montoya was before he came to NASCAR, but just bring a breath of fresh air to NASCAR was all it took for me to pick him as the guy to cheer for. Now I know I have picked the right man, not only as a driver but also as a good individual.

My wife doesn't like Juan but I think he is a great addition to NASCAR racing. I have long followed the Havoline Star car since Davey Allison.
I'm pleased how Juan has adapted to the heavier cars and really like his aggressive driving style. Only one guy more aggressive, that's Roudy Bush. I'd sure have liked it if Juan had been able to take Bush on toward the end of the race. Too bad Ambrose took him out of the running.

Good effort though, get them at Loudon.

Hi Tab , you know sometimes I can be a little harsh, but not this time. I have one mission today and that is to talk about Marcos Ambrose. To start off, his owner should give the rotten 37 points he earned for his fabulous 42nd place finish over to the 42 team and that would make up for the loss. Juan was going to win this race, you could tell by the way he was driving. TNT and all the other networks spent all this lip service on what a great race Marcos Ambrose drove. I have no idea what they were talking about. A DNF is not a great race. Everyone kisses this guys butte like he has all these wins and the truth is the guy DOES NOT BELONG IN A CUP RACE, especially a track he has never driven. The little trick of him catching a rear bumper on a corner cost him a win at Watkins Glen last year and also cost Robby Gordan a loss. He did the same crap to Boris Said down in Mexico and then continued on to Sonoma to destroy a textbook finish and plan by the 42 crew. That win would have put the 42 right back in the thick of the chase, because drivers are falling right now. This guy running around with that grin on his face has run its course and everyone saying what a nice guy he is. Boris had it right in Mexico City and I don't know why Boris just didn't finish him off in Sonoma. Best Race Juan ran all year because he was only passed by one guy on a green and that was sketchy by Kyle Busch after Juan lost his momentum.
GREAT JOB BY THE 42 TEAM and don't let Ambrose slip by on this one. Clausen can take care of him in the Nationwide series.

Good job guys!
It would have been awesome to see Busch and Montoya battling for the win in the final laps, but 6th is a small victory considering the incident with the 21 and considering that the 20 and 26 ended up even worse with Harvick's help.
It was good to see Harvick messing up, like Kyle Busch put it:
"Everybody makes mistakes, but when Harvick comes up to me and runs his mouth last weekend like he did it at Michigan and say all the stuff he did, he sort of stuck it right back in his mouth this weekend."
I felt bad for Franchitti and Pruett, not a good weekend for any of them, great job JPM as expected.
Keep the momentum going!

Oh Michigan. What a horrible race I thought. Not only was it arguably the most boring race I've seen, it was hard to watch Juan suffer so terribly. What, were we 2, 3 laps down by the end of the race? I was starting to wonder if the season was over for the #42 team what with all the bad luck and crew chief swaps and the goings on with the other Ganassi cars. Fortunately, with a little good luck and some good hard work the #42 team turned things around at Sonoma. Good to see #42 running so well. The spinout was a real bummer, but getting back up to 6th place ain't bad at all. But, a #42, #40, #41 one-two-three finish would've just been da bomb. Pruett is a quality driver and it would be great to see him win one of these. He's just tearing it up over at Rolex.

Quote of the day I thought - Junior to his spotter whilst following Juan and trying to just finish intact: "Tell Juan to speed up.... he's a pro."

Also, Kudos to the Ganassi/Target Indy team. As a Ganassi follower it's nice to know that we stand a good chance of winning every couple of weeks be it NASCAR, IRL, or the Rolex series. I've really been paying attention to the IRL races as they have been real good this year. That Texas race was awesome with side-by-side racing all day. That was the race to watch that week as the NASCAR race that week (forget which track) was a bit dull. The Rolex is always fun to watch because Pruett/Rojas always seem to be near the front and there's lots of action with so many cars on the track.

Good job guys and keep digging.

Dear Tab -
Great Race as was expected in Sonoma. My good luck charm I gave to JP must of helped a little. We really love listening to you and just wish the radio's were a little clearer. LOL As far as the 21 car goes, he thought he was chasing kangaroo's not running a NASACAR race. Jr. did say it best, "Juan's a Pro". We will continue to be behind the 42 team as long as you keep racing. Keep making us laugh and doing the excellent job you do taking care of JP out there. We got our ears on always. Good luck next week. See you in August at California.

Hey Tab-

Great job this week man. I was one of the folks looking for the blog last week and when nothing was posted by Wednesday, I knew you were putting it behind you. I don't blame you man, it was rough. But the great finish last week was just what the doctor ordered.

I have Loudon practice on now and you all are 2nd, so I'm sure hoping the momentum keeps up from Sonoma. Finishes aren't always indicative of how well you all ran, and while sixth is great, you all deserved better. Thanks for giving us something to cheer about! Keep it up buddy!

How about that little spin deal at Loudon? If I wasn't already a JPM fan, I definitely would be now LOL. The best part is that Juan had the cajones to fess up to it!

Tab -
No blog and I know why it was a rough Sunday for you all. Keep up the great job you are doing. Maybe JP and Brian need to talk about it that will help them get along better. We still love you all very much! We will be listening Saturday night. All our best to you and the team!

Hey Tab,

I know that things have been rough lately, but please do not stop writting your blog, Good or bad, win or 42nd we are JPM fans and this space was the only thing we had to get to know what's going on.

Please take the time to write every week, even if it is "Nothing to say this week."

Been rough Tab but the fans are still hanging in there.
I'm going to make this short and sweet and leave out comments:
Last two Races combined Grade:(New Hampshire and Daytona)
Spotting- A-
Crew Chief- F
Wingo with the 41 Car- A+ (especially at New Hampshire)
Montoya during yellow flags- F-
Montoya during Green flags- F
Pit Crews- F- - -(New Hampshire was classic)
This is tough to write because I am by far your biggest Fan but
for Chicago, 43rd place would be stretching it. The car in race trim was junk.

Hello Tab,
I agree with Kenny G. in that we are Juan's loyal fans and will stick with the team no matter what happens. Someone is posting our blogs and I am in hopes it is you Tab, please keep up the postings each week. Keep in mind that you have an enormous amount of supporters out here and we are pulling for things to turn around for the 42 team.
