Rough Night in Richmond

The week of Richmond was very busy in the shop. Along with the Richmond cars, we had to prepare two cars for a test at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte. I am actually sitting in the tower high above the front straight here in Charlotte peaking over my computer screen to see when Juan will be coming out for the next run. Richmond was a bit of disappointment, but you have to keep an open mind when you are short track racing. Anything can happen! After a very strong qualifying effort it was looking like it was going to be a good night.

Once again it was a very exciting week in Talladega. The Superspeedway races are so different than any of the other tracks, you almost need to be in a different “mode” than normal. The crew chief swap this week took everyone by surprise and everything went really smooth this weekend in regards to all of that.

Action-Packed Phoenix

Even though the track in Phoenix is a 1-mile oval, we still consider it to be a short track with lots of action. The first practice of the weekend started off horribly. At the test about a month ago we had a really good and fast car. When we came back out here it was a different story. The hotter temperatures and things of that nature made the car seem much different to Juan. We struggled to find him a set up that he liked and he got really frustrated. After practice when things cooled down and qualifying came Juan ran a really good lap to put us 15th on the starting grid. Read all of Action-Packed Phoenix
A Tough Texas

I must first apologize to everyone who has been checking in to read this week’s blog, wondering what went on at Texas. This week has been a blur and we are already on the plane heading to Phoenix. The Texas race was quite frustrating. We never could get the handling quite right all weekend. I think it is a mixture of many things and they are being addressed. These cars are so difficult to get the handle on. Everyone on the track is having difficulty getting it correct. I don’t think any car in the field handles well, some just a tiny bit better than others. With the old style of car you could get the set-up close and the driver could make up the rest because the car had a much lower center of gravity and considerably more front down force. This made the cars much more driver friendly, they could actually hustle them. The new car is like trying to balance on a knife edge, it is so easy to fall on one side or the other.

Mayhem at Martinsville!

The weekend of Martinsville started out really well. Six other guys and I on the team took advantage of really good weather to ride our motorcycles to Virginia for the race. It was only about a two hour trip and it was really nice to get out on the bike for an afternoon of good riding. There are a few races throughout the year that we are able to ride to that are not too far away. I should have considered the weather forecast for later in the week! I will get to that later.Read all of Mayhem at Martinsville!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far! Sorry for the delay this week. We were the “random” finisher after the race chosen by NASCAR for a complete teardown. We were at the track for an additional three hours then had to drive home, so it was a pretty late night. We had a good day at the shop today preparing a speedway car for the wind tunnel to get ready for Talladega in a few weeks. I spent most of the day on it making sure the radiator pans and a few other things are just like they will be in race conditions so we can get some good info.

All that was Atlanta

I would like to start off by saying thank you to all of those who have written in to the comments section. I really enjoy reading them and hearing what everyone has to say. I check it nearly every day, so keep on writing. Friday was a cool day, but not too bad. We tried a little something different in Atlanta for practice. We normally make some race runs and when Juan is ready, we change the car to qualifying trim at the end and make a mock run. Since Atlanta is one of Juan’s favorite tracks and the threat of rain was near, we decided to try doing a qualifying run first thing. Juan did not like it. In qualifying you must be on the edge and this track is so fast, you almost need to build up to make a qualifying run. So with a little swapping we were able to make some longer runs and got in some descent practice. Qualifying was postponed twice for rain and Juan put in a pretty good lap for a 19th-place effort.

Long Day in Vegas

The weekend in Vegas was truly unique. After being the fastest car in the two day test early last month, we were looking forward to the Las Vegas race. When practice began the car was handled nothing like it did at the test. The set-up was the same. We knew it was fast, so there was no reason to change it. The only thing different was the weather. During the test it was quite chilly. I am not sure what the temperature was but you did need a jacket to be outside. When we came back for the race it was quite hot -enough to where sun block was in order. But anyway we struggled terribly. The car was ultra loose and with even huge changes on the first two runs, Juan lost the rear of the car and wrecked between turn one and two. The car never looked right from the start; it just wasn’t “in the track.” Meaning it never got down in the corner to carry any speed.

Lots of Rain and a Day Late in California

I have never been to California when it has rained so much. It rained every day we were there except Monday for the rescheduled finish of the race. Qualifying was rained out and we able to get in about an hour of practice before the rains came again. The starting grid was determined by the owner points from last year. Even though the start of the race was delayed, we really thought we could get it in that night. The track has pretty big seams in between the grooves and the officials had a hard time drying out the water that constantly seeped from the seams. There had been so much rain it completely saturated every crack and crevice, the banking on the track kept the water flowing out. Read all of Lots of Rain and a Day Late in California
A Disappointing 500

I apologize for the blog being so late this week! I did not forget about it! The race in Daytona was so disappointing to me and I was ready to get out of there and forget about it, but not completely. I try to look at the situation different and learn for the future. One of the most frustrating things is being so close to the front and getting shuffled back in the pack. You definitely have to look out for yourself because nobody else will. While they were three wide the 22 car hit the left rear corner of our car just before he wrecked. The hit pushed the quarter panel onto the tire and it was smoking heavily. With just around five laps to go we had to pit, the tire would not have made it. We were in the very back and could not get up in the mix. I had really high expectations but it was not meant to be. That’s about it for Daytona.Read all of A Disappointing 500
