Casey Mears and No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge
AMD at The Glen -- Watkins Glen International Advance
Texaco/Havoline Team Facts:
NEXTEL Cup Series
• Standings: Casey Mears and the Texaco/Havoline team remain 15th in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup standings following their 23rd-place finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With five races remaining before The Chase for the NEXTEL Cup, Mears sits 333 points out of 10th place.
• The Glen: Casey Mears was poised for a top-10 finish at Watkins Glen International last year when he was penalized for speeding down pit road. Mears was running in the top 10 at the midpoint of the race when the call occurred. He was able to battle back from the 39th position to finish 23rd. In 2004, Mears earned the first top-five finish of his career on pit strategy when he drove his Dodge to a fourth-place finish. Shortly after taking the checkered flag, his car ran out of fuel. The Texaco/Havoline crew finished 13th in last year’s 92-lap event.
• Seeing Red: Rear tire changer, Rich Macco a.k.a. Red, hails from upstate New York in North Syracuse. He made his rookie leap over the wall for a NASCAR Craftsman Series team, and also made his first trip to victory lane that same day. He has been involved in racing for seven years.
• Chassis: Crew chief Donnie Wingo and the Texaco/Havoline team are bringing chassis #310 for the second and final road course race of the season to Watkins Glen. Mears piloted this chassis earlier this season at Infineon Raceway. He and the Texaco/Havoline team rallied back from involvement in a multi-car melee on lap 1 to finish 20th in the Dodge/Save Mart 250 in Sonoma.
• A full weekend for CGRFS: The Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates teams will be in full force this weekend between The Glen and Kentucky Speedway. In addition to the No. 41 NASCAR Busch Series entry and the three NEXTEL Cup Series entries, the Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Rolex Sports Car team will also be racing at Watkins Glen this weekend. The two Chip Ganassi Racing IndyCar teams will be at Kentucky Speedway for their 12th race of the season. Logistically, CGRFS will be traveling approximately 150 employees to the two venues.
Casey Mears Quotes:
On The Glen …
“The Texaco/Havoline guys have worked really hard on this road course car. Even though it’s the same car I ran at Sonoma, they’ve made a ton of changes to it. From the road guys, to the guys back at the shop, everyone has been putting in so much extra time to improve our cars. They tried to apply as many of the concepts they used on our short track car that we ran at Loudon to this car, without completely rebuilding it.
“Out of the two road courses, I prefer to race at Watkins Glen. I also tend to run better at the track, but it has a completely different feel to me than Sonoma. Sonoma to me is a bunch of mini Martinsville’s. The corners are tight and there isn’t much grip. You run higher speeds at The Glen and is has a ton more grip. It caters to my road course driving style more than Sonoma.”
