Texaco/Havoline first entered the world of NASCAR racing in 1987 as the sponsor of young driver Davey Allison. The Texaco/Havoline Ford Thunderbird first took to the track at the Motorcraft 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 15. Allison drove the Texaco/Havoline car to victory lane 19 times before his untimely death in 1993. |
Highlights in Texaco/Havoline Car:
1987
- Ran a limited 22-race schedule (19 sponsored by Texaco/Havoline) for Ranier Racing and earned rookie of the year honors
- Captured two victories in his rookie season at Talladega and Dover
- Finished the season with two wins, nine top-five and 10 top-10 finishes
1988
- Competed in his first full season in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and finished eighth in the championship standings
- Added another two victories to his resume at Michigan and Richmond
- Ended the season with three poles, two wins, 12 top-five’s and 16 top-10’s
1989
- Engine builder and team manager Robert Yates purchased team from Ranier, forms Robert Yates Racing and keeps Allison on as driver
- Finished 11th in the points standings
- Won two races, Talladega and Daytona
1990
- Captured the checkered flag at Bristol Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway
- For the third consecutive season, finished in the top 15 in points (13th) with two wins, five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes
1991
- Finished third in the championship standings and recorded a career best of five victories (Charlotte, Sears Point, Michigan, Rockingham and Phoenix)
- Also earned three poles in 1991 including the top spot at the Daytona 500
- Went on to rack up 12 top-five’s and 16 top-10’s
1992
- Led the points standings for the first 15 races of the season en route to a third-place finish in the championship standings for the second consecutive year
- Captured five victories that season including the season opener at Daytona, the four other wins came at North Wilkesboro, Talladega, Michigan, and Phoenix
1993
- Started in 16 races before tragic death in a helicopter crash in July
